How was this transferred? The video appears to jump up and down, particularly in the opening credits.

Subject: Very High Production Values
Subject: Very High Production Values
I was struck by the very high production values in this film. Just a few examples here. Things like several camera angles taken on a bus. One was through the window as passengers got off. Then a high angle as the femme fatale got off and walked down the street. Lots of cutaways during two-shots between Holmes and Watson in the detective's flat. One night shot during day had a strong light in a basement window to enforce the illusion in was night. Indeed, a whole bunch of details we rarely see nowadays. Nowadays it's a lot of cutaways to maintain visual interest. Thus, I give it the highest rating for camera and other production values.
One more thing, Patricia Morison as the femme fatale going after the music boxes--see her remarkable bio in Wikipedia. She went on to star on Broadway. Was a mezzo soprano. Astounding lady!

I've enjoyed listening and watching the adventures of Sherlock Holmes for many years (over 40). To me Basil Rathbone IS Sherlock Holmes, as is Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson. Perfect casting.

I really enjoyed this Sherlock Holmes movie with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. The main and supporting actors, the dialogue, and a good plot all served to make this entertaining. These movies are very much appreciated. The radio counterpart is also worth listening to on the Internet Archive.

Yes I know this isn't one of the wonderfully faithful BBC/PBS adaptations, and it is based more on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters than his story. Nevertheless, Universal's modernized Sherlock Holmes yarns have an appeal all their own, and this one is no exception. The plot involves murder, music boxes and a scheme that could threaten the stability of the British Empire. Basil Rathbone's Holmes is brilliant as ever, and Nigel Bruce is engaging as the ever-bumbling Dr. Watson. It all adds up to seventy-two minutes of sleuthing fun. (a.k.a. Sherlock Holmes in Dressed to Kill)

I've been to Samuel Johnson's house (it is still a museum as it was in the movie 63 years ago) where the last scene takes place, and the film makers either used the real interior or did a magnificent job of reproducing it, down to the last detail. By the way, the attic room where the final action takes place was also where Dr. Johnson compiled the first English dictionary.
So appropriate and so perfect...

Its a fact of life that one day I will be dead so will you. There is no thing can do to stop this. However we can make the most of our time on this earth. Doing something useful with our time here can help other and it also give us a sense of purpose and our life some meaning. You only live one, this is a not rehearsal. Life is like a big performance and one the curtain has come down on it there will be no encore. So we should live like him (always help other) and our life some meaning.

I too am a big fan of the Basil Rathbone movies about Sherlock Holmes. This one is great too. Although the sound and image are quite clear, this particular print is so unstable that it distracts me from a great story. Maybe there's some kind of video software out there that could help?

This film, eventhough it is enjoyable to watch:is the last film Mr. Rathbone for Universal Pictures as Holmes. I felt at this time "the Holmes character is strankling my creative force as an actor." A shame to see but we are glad he did what he did to Mr. Holmes to life for so many to enjoy. Please get as many as you can IA of these gems of Holmesania.

I was introduced to the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes series when I was about nine or ten. I had a terrible flu that year that dragged on and on, and to console me, my father brought the entire series home from the video rental place for me to watch. Even though I didn't understand many of the subtleties, I adored them. I'm so happy to discover that these movies are just as good as I remember.

The quality of the stream is excellent.
The villain is in the back seat of the car, and she pulls out her compact..."Of course, he's having us followed...don't look."

This is not a good movie in substitution for reading Sir Conan Doyle's work, but it is a good movie nonetheless. As a mystery lover, I enjoyed it immensely.

The stories aren't true to Doyle's works but are quite enjoyable nevertheless. Before there was Jermey Brett as the "perfect" Sherlock Homes there was Basil Rathbone, and he certainly rates up there with Brett, and Peter Cushing as one of the great "Homes" of all time. Worth watching.

Quite an intersting plot make this Sherlock Holmes movie interesting to watch. A worthy Antagonist to Sherlock leads to a duel of wits.
While on the one hand the level of sophistication within the story is high, some crudeness in characters (mainly the Chaffeur is a posterboy for a cliche) let the movie a little down.
3 Stars for the actors, 5 Stars for the plot makes an even 4!
Have fun !

I love the old Sherlock Holmes films. I have them on old video tapes, I have some (when I've been able to find them) on DVD. But this downloaded version was of higher quality than DVDs that I PAID for!
I hope more of these get preserved digitally by people who care about the quality of the work. No clicks, pops, or gaps in the film on this one.
